N57J Lowers Special

The #33 Lowers Special biplane raced at Reno in 1969. Both Richard Minges and Connie Marsh flew qualifying time trials in the aircraft. Richard Minges placed 2nd in the consolation race with #33 that year.

  1. Designed and built by Jack lowers of Clinton, N..C. The aircraft wing ribs were made out of Welding rods silver soldered together. Aircraft was covered by his wife "Flo" who worked by his side. Jack, along with his friend Richard Minges raced the aircraft around the country. Jack also built a formula 1 racer with a wire braced wing named #66 "Idgets Midget." Minges and he built the formula 1 racer named #97"old Blue". They were also working on a unlimited racer based around a Ranger V-77 engine,the LM-1. Jack lost his life in a formula 1 racing midair in Kentucky and Richard racing a T-6 at Cape May, N.J.

  2. Jack Lowers was a gifted builder and pilot. My Dad worked for Jack for a couple of summers after the local air-force base closed and my dad's flight instruction job disappeared. Jack built Cut-back cubs and modified stearmans for spraying and dusting. He made some of the first streamlined spraybooms. He also built his own dry spreaders utilizing a venturi concept.

    1. Hey Mike, I grew up down the road from Jacks airport. Many hours spent down there. Cut back Cubs, 450 and 600 stearmans, Racing t-6's. Jack's F1 wirebraced wing Idgets Midget F1,Richard Minges "old Blue". I have Jacks Biplane racer now. Good memories gone too soon.
